Proud to be an American Gala Fundraiser – A Great Success

June 14, 2008

Over 80 people rallied together on June 14th for this Flag Day event sponsored by the Montgomery County Federation of Republican Women, under the direction and planning expertise of Program Chairman, Roseanne Szabados. Food was delicious, service top notch, entertainment by Dolly’s GOP Trio most enjoyable, and all celebrated Flag Day by singing patriotic songs, led by vocalist Michelle Keegan.

The Gala, held at a stately Potomac home, included rousing short talks by National Committeewoman, The Honorable Joyce Lyons Tehres, by Jim Shalleck, State Chairman of the McCain campaign and heard the campaign issues of Dr. Steve Hudson, candidate for The House of Representatives Congressional 8th District. Present also were many representatives of the 9 Federation clubs, whose events and contacts are available on this web site.

Gov. Michael Steele, Honorable Louise M. OWH Friends:

Thanks to each of you for another exciting month of greeting our troops home!  We have a few notes from family members that we have posted at the bottom of this e-newsletter.

This month, we are scheduled to cover 8 events (actually 9 flights total).  That’s over 2,000 troops in one month.  With your help, we know we can do it!

Friday is July 4th.  What a perfect day to round up your family, friends, and neighbors and join us at the airport to greet home those heroes that make our freedom possible.  Bring your American flags AND enthusiasm.  Information on all of the events is below.

We look forward to seeing you at the airport to welcome home our troops.  We love seeing new faces so feel free to bring new people.  Thank you for your generosity and dedication to our troops!

Very truly yours,

John Flynn and Kathy Thorp

Co-Chairmen

Wednesday, July 30 @ 12:45 p.m. – Barbara Flanagan

UPDATE - Wednesday, July 2, at 7:00 p.m. – the troops should arrive between 7:30-9:00 p.m.  Herman “Woody” Wood is the team captain.  Please RSVP by e-mailing captwood@erols.com or calling his cell phone at (443) 632-5188.  You are strongly encouraged to check our event hotline at (410) 630-1555 for any updates on the day of the event – definitely before heading to the airport.  If you would like to bring a contribution for the goodie bags, please consider bringing bottled water (1/2 liter size) or single serving/pre-packaged cookies, crackers, gra nola bars, chips, or candy.

Friday, July 4th, at 1:30 p.m. – What better way to celebrate our nation’s independence and those who keep us free!  Join us on July 4th at 1:30 p.m. (plenty of time to get to fireworks and cookouts later), and welcome our heroes home.  Duke and Jean Case are the team captains. RSVP by e-mailing dukecase@gmail.com or by calling (410) 570-6926.

Same information applies to each of our welcome home events:

When you arrive at BWI airport, come to the International Flights section on the Lower Level near Customs (this is the final gate on the lower level – just past Baggage Claims 13-14).

Wear something patriotic and feel free to bring signs welcoming our troops home and thanking them for their service.  Please bring handmade cards from children to go in the goodie bags.  Please consider bringing prepackaged/single-serving snacks and ½ liter bottled water for the goodie bags.  Please do not bring homemade cookies, fresh fruit, or other perishable food items

You have three options: (1) park in the hourly parking garage (cost is free for first ½ hour and $2 every ½ hour after that); if you park in the hourly parking garage, take the top ramp (Levels 5 & 6). At the top of that ramp, go left towards the International Terminal. The International Terminal will be at the exact opposite side of the garage from where you enter. If you park in a space near the exit booths on the left, that is most ideal. Right next to the exit booths, you will see a covered walkway going to the airport. That will take you to the International Terminal, which is where we are meeting. Once inside, go down the escalator and join us in the lobby; (2) park in a private lot ($6.35 for daily parking with coupon at http://www.econoparkexpress.com/ or $6.40 for daily parking at http://www.airportfastpark.com/main/baltimore.aspx) and take the shuttle to the International Arrivals Terminal or (3) perhaps the easiest way is to drop off your guests at the airport (if you are carpooling) and park nearby at the free parking lot for the light rail and ride it to the airport - it drops you off right at the International Terminal where our event is ($3.20 roundtrip or $1.10 roundtrip for seniors – more info and light rail schedule at http://www.mtamaryland.com/services/lightrail/schedule/lightrail.pdf).

Thanks to some very generous supporters

Thanks to Verizon, who sent a representative to an event last week to hand out prepaid phone cards to the troops.

Schools from throughout the state have contributed “thank you” cards for our troops.  We are grateful for the hard work of the students at St. John's Lane Elementary School (Ellicott City), St. Louis Catholic School (Clarksville), Clemens Crossing Elementary School (Columbia), JohnPaul Regional Catholic School (Baltimore), Fulton Elementary School (Fulton), and Brooklyn Park Middle School (Brooklyn Park).  Also, Brownie Troop 40 (Ellicott City) made Operation Welcome Home a group project and contributed “thank you” cards.  We also received a wonderful banner from the kindergartners of Gunpowder Elementary School (Perry Hall).  A special thanks to all of these young people for their creativity and thoughtfulness.  We can always use “thank you” cards so keep ‘em coming.  Thanks!

Each month, we recognize the generosity of those making large contributions and select certain events during the month in which we use their contributions to fund the supplies for that event.  Please see below for this month’s event sponsors:

July 4th – North County Republican Club (Anne Arundel County)

July 16th – Members of the Bodkin Yacht Club

July 19th – Teachers and staff at Bodkin Elementary School

July 30th - Emmanuel Lutheran Church

Additional sponsors will be recognized in the months ahead.  Thanks to each of these organizations and individuals for supporting the troops.

Notes of appreciation from troops and families

In each goodie bag, we include a note card from Operation Welcome Home letting the soldiers know how much all of the volunteers appreciate them, what services are available at the USO airport lounge, where they can go for a free shower to clean up before catching their connecting flight, and we mention our e-mail address.  Please read a sample of some of the e-mails we have received from soldiers and families.

From the mother of a soldier (she was on the West Coast when her son traveled through BWI)

“With all my heart I thank you all for the job you are doing!  I'm sure all these men and women you greet are really surprised and blown away...  They aren't real sure what we all are thinking here at home all the time, unfortunately.

You are appreciated more than you know... thanks again for being there when we can't.”

From the wife of a soldier

“I just wanted to share this with you – the last newsletter for my husband’s unit.  Please note on the actual newsletter his kudos to your great organization for all you do.  Look for us to join you in the near future.  We’re still adjusting to dad being home and there’s been a flurry of activity since he came home, but things should settle down soon and you can look for us to participate soon.  Thank you again for everything.  You guys are truly the best!  Take care”

From parents of a soldier

“My husband and I were at the Baltimore International Airport on June 13, 2008 to welcome our son home from Iraq.  We met up with you folks there at the international terminal and helped fill the goodie bags and put up Welcome Home signs.  We just wanted to say thank you for the warm welcome you gave all our troops.”

Montgomery County Republican Club Recognition

On Monday, March 24th, The Honorable Bill Witham, Chairman of the Montgomery County Republican Central Committee, accepted the United States Flag that was flown over Camp Fallujah, Iraq in honor of the Mid-Montgomery Women’s Republican Club for their support of the troops during this past year in the form of many packages of food and snacks. Marine Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Leake from Camp Fallujah wrote the club that “We thank you for supporting the troops here -- what was most important to the gang and me over here was knowing that folks back there cared about us and what we are doing.”

In accepting the flag, which will be prominently displayed at the Montgomery County Republican headquarters, Central Committee Chairman Witham expressed his thanks to the club and Lt. Colonel Leake for what he called this “great honor”.
