With over 400 high-spirited Republicans in attendance, the 18th Annual Red, White and Blue Dinner on Thursday, June 5th was a profound success for the Maryland Republican Party. Dr. Jim Pelura, Chairman, moderated an organized, fast moving exciting program which included former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, The Honorary Ellen Sauerbrey, as guest speaker. A dynamic keynote address was given by former CIA Operative Wayne Simmons who presented a thorough overview of national security issues.
The Montgomery County Federation of Republican Women was well represented at this event, seated with National Committeewoman, Honorable Joyce Lyons Terhes; other dignitaries in attendance were former Republican Lt. Gov. Michael Steele, Honorable Louise M. Pope, National Committeeman, and Patt Parker, President, Maryland Federation of Republican Women and a Delegate-at-large to the 2008 Republican National Convention.

each of you for another exciting month of greeting our troops
home! We have a few notes from family members that we have posted at

your family, friends, and neighbors and join us at the airport to greet home
those heroes that make our freedom possible. Bring your American
flags AND enthusiasm. Information on all of the events is below.
We look
forward to seeing you at the airport to welcome home our troops. We
love seeing new faces so feel free to bring new people. Thank you
for your generosity and dedication to our troops!

When you
arrive at BWI airport, come to the International Flights section on the Lower Level
near Customs (this is the final gate on the lower level – just past Baggage
Claims 13-14).
Wear
something patriotic and feel free to bring signs welcoming our troops home and
thanking them for their service. Please bring handmade cards from
children to go in the goodie bags. Please consider bringing
prepackaged/single-serving snacks and ½ liter bottled water for the goodie
bags. Please do not bring homemade cookies, fresh fruit, or other
perishable food items.
You have
three options: (1) park in the hourly parking garage (cost is free for first ½
hour and $2 every ½ hour after that); if you park in the hourly parking garage,
take the top ramp (Levels 5 & 6). At the top of that ramp, go left towards
the International Terminal. The International Terminal will be at the exact
opposite side of the garage from where you enter. If you park in a space near
the exit booths on the left, that is most ideal. Right next to the exit booths,
you will see a covered walkway going to the airport. That will take you to the
International Terminal, which is where we are meeting. Once inside, go down the
escalator and join us in the lobby; (2) park in a private lot ($6.35 for daily
parking with coupon at http://www.econoparkexpress.com/ or
$6.40 for daily parking at http://www.airportfastpark.com/main/baltimore.aspx)
and take the shuttle to the International Arrivals Terminal or (3) perhaps the
easiest way is to drop off your guests at the airport (if you are carpooling)
and park nearby at the free parking lot for the light rail and ride it to the
airport - it drops you off right at the International Terminal where our event
is ($3.20 roundtrip or $1.10 roundtrip for seniors – more info and light rail
schedule at http://www.mtamaryland.com/services/lightrail/schedule/lightrail.pdf).

Notes
of appreciation from troops and families
In each
goodie bag, we include a note card from Operation Welcome Home letting the
soldiers know how much all of the volunteers appreciate them, what services are
available at the USO airport lounge, where they can go for a free shower to
clean up before catching their connecting flight, and we mention our e-mail
address. Please read a sample of some of the e-mails we have received
from soldiers and families.

“With all
my heart I thank you all for the job you are doing! I'm sure all these
men and women you greet are really surprised and blown away... They
aren't real sure what we all are thinking here at home all the time,
unfortunately.
You are
appreciated more than you know... thanks again for being there when we can't.”
From the
wife of a soldier
“I just
wanted to share this with you – the last newsletter for my husband’s
unit. Please note on the actual newsletter his kudos to your great
organization for all you do. Look for us to join you in the near
future. We’re still adjusting to dad being home and there’s been a flurry
of activity since he came home, but things should settle down soon and you can
look for us to participate soon. Thank you again for everything.
You guys are truly the best! Take care”

On Monday, March 24th, The Honorable Bill Witham, Chairman
of the Montgomery County Republican Central Committee, accepted the United States Flag that was flown over Camp Fallujah, Iraq in honor of the Mid-Montgomery Women’s Republican Club for their support of the troops during this past year in the form of many packages of food and snacks. Marine Lieutenant Colonel Timothy Leake from Camp Fallujah wrote the club that “We thank you for supporting the troops here -- what was most important to the gang and me over here was knowing that folks back there cared about us and what we are doing.”
In accepting the flag, which will be prominently displayed at the Montgomery County Republican headquarters, Central Committee Chairman Witham expressed his thanks to the club and Lt. Colonel Leake for what he called this “great honor”.
